Interior vs Exterior Film:
What the Rating Actually Means.

Most architectural film is made for interiors, and most of what we install goes on a kitchen door, a wardrobe, a reception front or a boardroom table. A smaller, specific part of the library is rated to go outside.

The rating is not a marketing word and it is not ours to give — it is the manufacturer’s own statement about a reference. This page sets out what it means, which references carry it, and how you check which kind is on your quote.

In one sentence

The short answer.

An exterior rating is the manufacturer’s own statement that a particular reference is built for outdoor use; in our catalogue thirty-four references out of more than 1,500 carry one, and everything else is rated by its manufacturer for interiors.

What the two ratings mean in practice, on the same building.

Who gives the ratingThe manufacturer, against the reference, on its own data sheet. The manufacturer, against the reference, on its own data sheet. Nobody re-rates a film by using it somewhere else.
How many references carry itThe overwhelming majority — over 1,500 published references across the four film brands.Thirty-four: eleven from Cover Styl’ (the Exterior Collection, coded EXT-), seventeen from 3M DI-NOC (an EX suffix) and six from LX Hausys (the Outdoor series).

The warrantyThe manufacturer’s own warranty against cracking, peeling and fade for up to 10 years, passed through to you in writing.Every reference in Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection carries the manufacturer’s own warranty of six to twelve years depending on the reference, passed through in writing.
What the range looks likeEverything: wood, marble and stone, concrete, metal, textile, leather and solid colour, across every texture the film brands publish.A deliberately tight palette — solid colours, wood grains, a stone and a metal — chosen for the elements the range is made for.
How you check itThe reference named against each element on your written, itemised quote. The same place, and the reference itself says so: EXT-, an EX suffix, or an Outdoor reference.

The rating is a fact published by the manufacturer, recorded against the reference in our catalogue and repeated on your quote. It is the one thing on this page nobody has to take our word for.

From the library

Four exterior-rated references.

Pulled live from the catalogue — a wood grain and a metal from Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection, a walnut from 3M DI-NOC’s EX range and a solid from LX Hausys’ Outdoor series.

Each of these is recorded in our catalogue as rated by its manufacturer for interior and exterior use. Everything else in the library is an interior reference, and we quote it only for interiors.

First principles

What an exterior rating is, and who gives it.

An exterior rating is a manufacturer’s statement about a specific reference: this film is built to go outside. It attaches to the reference, not to the brand, not to the collection and not to the installer.

That matters because the rating is not transferable by good intentions. An interior reference does not become an exterior one because it is applied carefully, or because it goes under an overhang, or because the element faces south. The manufacturer rated what it rated.

Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection is a different construction from the interior library — PMMA and PVDF layers engineered to endure the elements — and the other two exterior-rated groups are similarly their brands’ own outdoor ranges. Our part is to specify the right one and to name it on the page that carries the price.

Outside

Where exterior film goes.

Interiors are our craft, and the same discipline comes outside when a client needs it. These are the elements the exterior range is made for.

Facades and cladding panels. Large flat elements where a colour change transforms a building without touching its structure.

Front doors, garage doors and gates. The three elements that carry the first impression of a house, and the three most often dated by their colour rather than their condition.

Shopfronts. A retail frontage refreshed in days, in place, without the frontage being rebuilt.

Outdoor kitchens. The same joinery logic as an indoor kitchen, on a reference rated for where it is standing.

In every case the element is surveyed first: measured, its condition assessed, and the scope settled in that visit — so what you are buying is described before it is priced.

The line we hold

Why an interior reference stays indoors.

There are more than 1,500 interior references in the library and thirty-four exterior-rated ones, so the temptation to stretch an interior film onto an outdoor element is real — especially when the colour a client has fallen for lives on the interior side.

We do not quote it. An interior reference has not been rated by its manufacturer for outdoor use, and we quote what we can stand behind in writing. Naming an interior reference against an outdoor element would put a warranty on your quote that the manufacturer never gave.

What we do instead is show you the exterior palette honestly — it is tighter than the interior library, and that is the trade — and settle the scope at the survey, on the element, before you spend anything.

In writing

The warranty passes through to you.

We do not write our own product warranty over a manufacturer’s. That cover against cracking, peeling and fade is passed through and stated in writing on your quote, so you hold a document rather than the recollection of a conversation, and our workmanship cover is written alongside it.

For interior films that is up to 10 years. For Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection it is the manufacturer’s own six to twelve years depending on the reference you choose. Cover Styl’ also rates the exterior range for a lifespan of up to 20 years — that figure is the manufacturer’s and we quote it as theirs.

The honest expectation for your particular element — its condition, its orientation, what it is asked to do — is something we give you at the survey, in person, before it is priced.

Good questions

What people ask about exterior film.

Can any wrapping film be used outdoors?

No, and this is the question worth asking of any wrapping quote for an outdoor element. An exterior rating is the manufacturer’s own statement about a specific reference, and in our catalogue thirty-four references out of more than 1,500 carry one: eleven from Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection, seventeen from 3M DI-NOC and six from LX Hausys’ Outdoor series. Everything else in the library is rated by its manufacturer for interiors, and we quote it only for interiors. An interior reference does not become suitable for a gate or a facade because it is applied carefully or because the element is sheltered — the rating attaches to the film, not to the intention.

How do I know whether a film is exterior-rated?

The reference tells you, and it should be on your quote. In our catalogue the exterior-rated references announce themselves: Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection is coded EXT-, 3M DI-NOC’s outdoor references carry an EX suffix, and LX Hausys publishes an Outdoor series. Every finish page in our library also records where the manufacturer rates that reference to be installed — interior, or interior and exterior — alongside its family, texture and warranty. On a written, itemised quote from us the reference is named against each element, so the rating is checkable before the work starts and again against the roll label on install day.

How long does exterior film last?

Every reference in Cover Styl’s Exterior Collection carries the manufacturer’s own warranty — six to twelve years depending on which reference you choose — and we pass that through and state it in writing on your quote. Cover Styl’ rates the range for a lifespan of up to 20 years; that figure is the manufacturer’s and we quote it as theirs rather than as a promise of ours. What the honest expectation is for your particular element depends on the element, its condition and what it faces, and that is a conversation we have at the survey, in person, before anything is priced.

Can you wrap a front door or a garage door?

Yes — both are among the elements the exterior range is made for, along with facades, gates, shopfronts and outdoor kitchens. The film comes from an exterior-rated range rather than the interior library, and the reference is named against the element on your written, itemised quote. We survey first: the element is measured, its condition is assessed and the scope is settled in that visit, so what you are buying is described before it is priced. Where an element needs repair before it needs a finish, we say so at the survey rather than after, and put it on the page that carries the price.

Over to you

Compare these four yourself.

Four exterior-rated references opened in the comparison tool — family, texture, colour, where each can go and the manufacturer’s warranty, in one table.

Nothing here is a hold, a booking or a price. Your surveyor brings the film brands’ sample books to the visit, and you can change your mind at any step — including on install day, before the film goes on.

Something outside?

See it on your
own surfaces.

Tell us the surfaces and the look. We measure element by element, bring the film brands’ sample books to you, and issue a written, itemised quote naming the exact film reference against each element, with preparation included in the price.
